Feature Walls

A feature wall is the one surface where Miami Stone Veneer Specialists would tell you to ignore cost per square foot. It's a small area doing a large job, and the difference between the cheap option and the right one is usually a few hundred dollars.

Light first, material second

This is the whole thing, and it gets decided backwards nearly every time. People choose a beautiful relief panel, install it, light it from the front, and wonder why it looks flat.

Every textured surface depends entirely on shadow. Front lighting fills the shadow in. Grazing light — a linear fitting close to the wall, above or below, throwing light along the surface — creates it.

So decide the lighting before the material. If you can't graze it, don't buy deep relief. A shallow textured stone under flat light will outperform an expensive sculptural panel under the same conditions.

Scale and edges

Take it wall to wall and floor to ceiling. A feature wall that stops short — a stone rectangle floating in the middle of a painted wall — reads as an accent that ran out of budget.

If the full wall is too much, use an architectural boundary instead: stop at a corner, a change of plane, or a structural column. Something that explains why it ends there.

Choosing the character

• Natural and warm — Rustic Stone, Chapa, Cantera. Reads as material. Suits residential and anywhere you want the room to feel settled.
• Graphic and designed — Poliedrix, Cubus, Trapezoid. Reads as pattern. Hospitality, commercial, and modern residential.
• Open and spatial — a lattice screen instead of a solid wall. Divides without closing, and the shadows it throws across the floor are half the point.

What it costs

A typical 100 to 150 square foot feature wall runs $1,200 to $3,900 in material depending on whether you're using stone or deep-relief panels. Add the lighting into the budget from the start — it's the cheapest part and it determines whether the rest was worth spending.
