Stone masonry in South Florida is dominated by two material groups: Florida limestone in its various forms (Keystone, coral rock, shellstone) and imported natural stones (limestone panels from Europe and South America, quartzite). The installation methods for each are different, and the material behavior in Miami's climate — particularly with regard to moisture, salt air, and UV — differs as well. We work with both regularly and adjust the mortar mix, sealing, and installation method to the specific material.

Repointing — the process of removing deteriorated mortar from existing stone joints and replacing it with fresh mortar — is one of the most common repair calls we get. Old stone walls, particularly Florida Keystone boundary walls and garden walls that have been in place for 20–30 years, frequently develop joint deterioration from water infiltration and thermal cycling. Repointing restores structural integrity to the wall and stops the water entry that accelerates further deterioration. It's significantly less expensive than rebuilding failed wall sections.

Mortar joint repair on newer failed installations is a different scope — these calls usually involve stone veneer that was improperly installed with the wrong mortar mix or inadequate coverage, and the joints are cracking or washing out after just a few years. We diagnose why the joints failed before specifying the repair mortar type. If the original mortar was too rigid and thermal cracking is the problem, we use a more flexible polymer-modified type for the repair. If the mortar was too weak, we use a proper type S or type N specification appropriate for the application.

Natural Stone Wall Construction

Building a natural stone wall from scratch — a boundary wall, a retaining wall, a garden wall — is craft work that's different from veneer installation. The stones are heavier, the structural requirements are different, and the aesthetic of exposed-face coursed stone requires skill in fitting and laying that develops over years of practice. We build both mortared stone walls and dry-stack walls depending on the application and client preference. Dry-stack walls (no mortar visible) require more material and more fitting time but look more natural and allow drainage through the wall, which matters for retaining wall applications in Miami's heavy rain events.

Entry gate columns and pilasters in natural stone are a popular request in Coral Gables, Pinecrest, and other neighborhoods with established architectural character. These structural elements require a concrete masonry core with stone as the face — not solid stone construction, which would be both structurally unnecessary and prohibitively expensive. We build the CMU core, then clad it in natural stone with the detailing (base course, cap course, corner returns) that gives it a proper column appearance.
